The Bottom Line:  A great starter reciever
If you are new in the HT market, or if you are value conscious (such as me!), this is THE ONE for you. I got this about 2 years ago just after it started getting rave reviews. Many in the internet based forums such as www.hometheaterforum.com were talking about this.

I went to me friendly store in Michigan, and loked at it. Having owned only an entry level prologic reciever, this one looked menacing. I bought it and came home.

I had a good TV and a decent DVD player at that time. The reciever was placed on the entertainment center and I proceeded to connect it to the gear.

I started with the speakers. It was tough job. I don't have stubby fingers, but with this reciever wedged between the wall and the entertainment center, it was tough to work with. I pulled the center forward and then I got the space needed.

It is a great feature to have the reliable binding post connections for the main speakers. The rear speaker connections are the clip type but that's OK.

In terms of connecting gear to this, you'll be amazed at the options. I could connect my VCR, DVD playr, SAT box, CD player, Tape Deck, A second VCR, 2 digital co-ax audio, 2 optical audio connections, and it has a 3rd video/audio connection possible from the front!. If you have one of those DVD players that does the Doly digital / DTS decoding itself, then this reciever gives you the ability to connect the 5.1 channels independantly!! Whoa!

I did all the connections, and ran the built in test signal to check the connections and balance the speakers. This is critical for pure HT audio enjoyment. One should get a Radio Shack sound pressure level meter and make sure that the sound coming from the speakers are all at the same level. (More later on this)

Most HT enthusiasts have all 6 speakers (5 + subwoofer). It is customary to designate the speakers as "small" (even if you have a tower) so that the subwoofer will do all the bass handling. This reciever allows that and also lets you change the spekers to large if you have any objections. You can also claibrate in the distance between you and the spakers (individually) to ensure that the sounds arrive at the appropriate time at the listener's ears.

Now the test... I pooped in a DTS Test DVD and watched the clip from "Haunting".. WOW!!!! The room exploded with the sound and the spatial soundstage... I sat down and went clip after clip, Terminator, Apollo13.. all of my DTS collection and soon I was teary eyed with pure joy! I made a good buy!

I have been enjoying this reciever for about 2 years now and not much has changed in the technology to make me want to go buy a new one... This is truly a HT beginner's gold mine.
