The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this product. It is well designed and meets or exceeds all my expectations for the product type in this price range.
After doing considerable research, and annoying many sales people by forcing them to perform multiple and lengthy product demos, we chose the Polariod PDV-0820. It's functionality and large screen made it our choice. The picture quality is not excellent, but it is very good when compared to any 8" screen under $1000 and most 6-7" screens. Obviously a 5" screen is going to be clear with no noticable pixellation, but that was just too small for what I wanted. (to be able to actually see the screen)
The most compelling reasons to buy this unit are the swivel screen, which will fold completely back on itself and lock in place so you can watch it closed, and the dual headphone jacks, so you can watch it with a friend. The A/V in/out feature is also great so you can watch it on a regular television, or even play video games on it with a console and a power inverter.
The only things I didn't like about this was the absence of a fast forward or rewind other than jumping to the next or previous scene, however this function is available on the remote control.
There are 3 screen modes (4:3), (16:9) and (16:9) stretched, the last one is of poor quality, the other 2 are the best depending on the format of the DVD.
The audio is great for a personal DVD player, it's not earth shaking, but that's really not what it was designed for. I use this primarily with headphones for personal use. If you want it really loud so everyone in the car can enjoy it, I might suggest a small FM transmitter which will broadcast the audio over FM radio and play it on your car stereo. These are available at most any electronics store or department store that sells radios and stuff.
I can't really speak to the durability because I have not had any problems with it thus far. Although it did fall out of the luggage rack on my school bus and landed in the aisle and was not damaged. It seems solid enough, I'm sure it's breakable and excessive opening and closing will probably wear the hinges. I strongly recommend buying this at a store that offers one of those extended warranties, because I honestly doubt any portable DVD player would last 4 years under frequent use.
