Same problem - doesn't work in vertical position

Pros Big screen, nice audio/video quality, supports all formats. Dual headphone jacks. Car cord incl.
Cons Car headrest holster is useless, since unit won't play DVD's in the vertical position.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Do not buy this model for the tablet/car holster mode, since it does not work in vertical position.
Bought Polaroid PDM-1040 from Ckt City a few days ago.
I didn't do my internet research until I got home - big mistake or I might have seen the other review posted here. But I can confirm the problem with playing DVD's in the vertical (i.e. car headrest holster) position. About half the time the DVD won't be read initially when the unit is folded to tablet mode and put in the vertical position. Even when you do get it to start, the unit will freeze every few minutes. Basically makes the car holster useless. Tried it with 3 of my own DVD's, and also with a rental DVD.

I tried to return the unit to Ckt City, but they wouldn't take the return without charging a $45 restock fee. (They did exchange the unit for free, but the new unit behaves exactly the same way -- seems to be an inherent flaw. Maybe they got a bad batch of stepper motors; in vertical position the motor has to work harder to position the lens, so maybe can't keep the alignment -- that's my engineering guess...)

It's too bad, since when when you play it in the normal (unfolded) mode, the unit plays fine, and it's a great combo of features and screen size for the price. But I'd recommend not buying it if you plan to use the car holster, and especially beware of the Ckt City restock fee policy. (It means if you want to return it, you have only limited options - pay the restock fee, or exchange it for another unit from Ckt City of equal or greater value).

I haven't called Polaroid yet, but will give it a try...
