Polaroid PDM-1058 Portable DVD Player - Very nice when someone gives you $150 towards it!

Pros Excellent picture quality, two headphone sets included, slim design.
Cons Tinny sounding speakers, remote and some other accessories beg to be broken or lost.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I did not compare this to many on the market and found it difficult to do online. I am neither thrilled or upset at my purchase.

Now my story:

We needed a DVD player for road/plane trips with our 3 year-old. Long story short, AT&T/BellSouth, aka the devil times two, have combined forces to peddle Internet, local and long distance service. They jumped in bed with DirecTV to compete with Comcast's triple threat. Further they had a vendor, an entirely different company, knock on my door. The person offered the moon and delivered something best used for fertilization for plants.

Anyway, DirecTV should have honored a promotion to give a free portable DVD player worth $129 since the $34.99 rate promised by Satan squared ballooned to over $90/month. Well, after about 5 calls explaining I was NOT associated with BellSouth/AT&T, I canceled every service I signed up for with them, and because they did not honor the deal they offered I deserved the promotion they have going for this free portable DVD player worth $130 (they honored two other promotions not associated with BS and AT&T, but not this one, not sure why as this was the least expensive).

I did get an offer of up to $150 credit towards my account with DirecTV if I bought one of my choosing and sent them a receipt for a purchase. "Please don't throw me in that brier patch!!!!" I was thinking since theirs was obviously cheap.

I looked online and didn't see one that was at least $150, but not too much more, that rated well. I looked here and at Amazon.com and many of the Polaroids rated well. Very little was posted on this model though I found this one at Circuit City for $192.59 all taxes included (7% in FL). So now that you know why I bought it, let me get to what you REALLY want to know!

This was amongst the larger screens in my price range of under $200 at 10", I measure 10.25". It also swivels 180 degrees and tilts 45 degrees. In fact you can fold it so that the screen is visible and it is as flat as it gets closed normally, 1.5", and all controls are accessible except opening it to insert a new disc.

The picture quality is phenomenal. I truly did not expect it to be as crystal clear as it is. Granted, smaller size screens are more easily made to look great than on larger screens. Still VERY impressive.

It comes standard with an adapter to be plugged into your vehicle for charging and/or a power source and a battery that does indeed last nearly the three hours claimed. Of course you have the standard wall plug-in as well. Also, you can hook it up to your TV and all cabling is included, which was a pleasant surprise.

The bad: the speakers could not suck worse if they tried on purpose. This is made up for by providing not one but two headphones but only one jack... They do have a splitter, but it is small and begs to be lost.

The remote is about as sturdy as a mobile home in a cat 5 hurricane. One step on it and it becomes a nice to have had. It is so thin it does not take triple A's but the battery you would find in a watch. It is 5" long, 2.25" wide and a scant .25" thick. Good thing all functions can be performed on the apparatus itself.

The 3 hour battery that powers the device adds another 2" to its length and is not the best of fits as far as ease of installation and removal.

Final Analysis

The price is not right for this based on its inferior speakers and workmanship as far as the outputs/inputs. Put another headphone jack on it for Jeebus sake and get some speakers that actually recognize bass and do not sound like you are overhearing a cell phone conversation of someone speaking to a loud talker.

The picture is great and if you plan to use it with headphones exclusively, you may very well be happy with it. I am overjoyed as it is for my son and he loves it. Of course I have seen him enthralled in rubbing mud on his face and in his hair...

It also is an alternative for the person or couple that travel together to purchase this instead of a traditional DVD player. It will work on your TV at home, through the TV's speakers and pack up easily for the next trip.

It is attractive for its versatility for sure.

Update 3/8/07

We took this on a short trip and it entertained the child famously. It was dropped from the height of 5' to a carpeted floor more than twice and it still works like a champ. The case is a backpack kind of deal which we were able to strap over the front seat's head rest of an Expedition. The bad part is you have to take it out of the backpack/carrying case to input a new DVD.

Fortunately, the boy will watch the same Diego DVD over and over (several episodes on a disc)!!!
