Main controls are flaky

Pros Not a bad value; image and audio are decent; swivel is a nice addition.
Cons DVD cursor controls (forward, backward, etc.) on main unit appear to be flaky.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Expect some problems with the cursor controls unless Polaroid does a recall to fix the problem. Even with problem, you can use the remote as a backup control.
I echo some of the issues raised by another reviewer. Overall, it is a good DVD Player with decent image quality and straight-forward design. But I had problems with the DVD cursor controls (on the main unit), so I could not advance, go backward, etc., unless I restarted the system. And sometimes, a restart did not help. The workaround would have been to use the remote control, but I did not bring it with me at the time.

Packaging:
Excellent overall. Everything is well braced and cushioned. You need to remove a bracket from the laser head before using.

Overall construction:
Light plastic feel, but not flimsy. The only thing that felt like it could break is the DVD cover. LCD panel can lock into place with the main unit and is released by a center switch. LCD panel can swivel up to 180 degrees and fold back into the main unit for some sort of space-saving design...I think this is so that it can be mounted to the back of a driver's seat in a car. Battery module locks into the rear of the unit, but seems like it can be easily knocked off if jolted.

Image Quality:
I have no experience with small LCDs so I have nothing to compare this with. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of image in such a small LCD...I was expecting a lot of jagged images but found images to be smoother/sharper than expected. It's what you can expect from a value LCD. Contrast and brightness was a little tricky...you need to find the right balance of brightness, contrast, AND LCD viewing angle. But overall, it was not a problem because I was not expecting hi fi quality. I did not try its video out quality.

Audio:
I have no complaints about the audio from the audio jacks. The package comes with a splitter so that two people can listen in. Don't expect great sound quality from the small speakers it comes with.

Controls:
Straight forward and clearly marked. Menus are intuitive and easy to navigate. Again, I experienced intermittent problems with the main cursor controls. Resetting the DVD unit resolved the problem, but not every time.

Battery Life:
I experienced the full 8 hours during its first 2 charges. The rest is unknown because I have already returned the unit due to the faulty controls.

I was planning to exchange the first unit with a new one because of the faulty controls; however, since I have read someone else with the same problem, I am guessing I will experience the problem again with a new unit...so I will not be replacing this with the same model.

GENERAL NOTE ON PORTABLE DVD PLAYERS AND AIRPORT SECURITY:
U.S. Airports require you to remove notebook PCs for security inspection lines. Although these DVD players are not notebooks, they will be confused as notebooks. To save time at the airport security, keep these out like a notebook PC for separate inspection.
