Okay TV for a Spare Bedroom
Pros
size, cost
Cons
sound and picture quality
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Recommended for a spare bedroom, not as a primary tv.
I recently purchased the Polaroid TDX-01930B LCD TV on sale for $279. At this price I can recommend it, but I certainly would not pay the going rate of $350 for the TV.
The Bad:
The picture quality is marginal, and simply does not compare well with any semi-major brand including inexpensive brands such as Westinghouse. Even the high-def channels do not look fantastic.
Regardless of if you have a DVD in the player, when you start the tv, the device begins spinning, and makes a loud noise for the first 30 seconds of operartion, the drive will then finish spinning up and all will be okay.
The sound quality is pretty poor. Absolutely no depth or bass in this tv, reminds me of very loud laptop speakers.
The Good
This TV does have a built in QAM tuner, so you can receive over the air broadcasts in HD, and with some cable companies (Comcast) you can get select tv channels in HD, though the numbers for them are odd (channel 29.1, 6.1, etc.) The channel line up is completely up to your cable provider, and they usually only provide the broadcast channels (pbs, abc, cbs, fox, nbc) in a high def format. However, being able to get those channels without a separate digital tuner box (that you need to rent) is a big plus.
Overall, the TV is easy to set up, and with the built in DVD player you have a lot less wires and devices to worry about. Using the DVD player is very easy, so ideal for plopping kids in front of it, without having to worry about extra remote controls and such. You do however need to change the input on the tv to watch the DVD player, it does not automatically switch when you pop a disk in.
The TV also will pull station information from the broadcast, such as id of the channel and the name of the program. It is a nice feature, however, you cannot scroll through the channel lineup to see what is on other channels, you actually have to change the channel and surf to each channel.
I would only recommend this tv in a spare guest bedroom, as it is not something you would want to watch daily. It is acceptable for a guest room because it is compact, has some nice features, and has the built-in dvd player.
