Polaroid i639M great value
Pros
Great value - buy it before they sell out
Cons
Just a basic camera
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Buy for your kids or as an entry camera - cheapest 6 Mp camera with a optical zoom camera
The i639 is available from Circuit City as one of the low end digital cameras. It has more features than the average point and shoot camera owner will ever use. It has 6M pixels which gets you into the acceptable range for most prints up to 16 inches. The price is low ~ $80 (US). Basically this is the lowest price camera that is over 5M pixels and with $20 SD card you have a digital camera for $100 - great value.
I jammed a 2GB SD card in with the batteries and was up and running in a minute. The biggest problem I had was getting the camera and accessories out of the packaging. The USB connector is an odd size uses the smaller micro size not the typical mini so don't lose the cable.
I pictures quality are fine - again better than what most owners can compose. The 3x optical zoom is acceptable range for most compositions - think this replaces the box cameras you buy from the drug store.
The set up and controls are far from the best. They all work fine once you learn them but not as easy to use as most digital cameras. They are all on the back (except for the shutter and power) which has an odd feel and the way they work is just odd. Once you get use to them you can make them work for you, in fact the one button to review is very quick fool proof (never gets into the wrong mode like the wheels on most cameras) - once you learn what the buttons do. The other pain in the SD slot is in the battery compartment, so when if you ever need to pull out the card the batteries go flying. But with 2 GB how many times are you switching out the SD card in the field?
I've had very high end cameras with lots of features and lens (zoom, fisheye, etc. I'd had compact digital camera (Nikon) and never used all of the features but would like more zoom. So for a simple point and shoot that you can throw around, give to your kids, or generally not worry about - this is a great camera for its price.
