The Bottom Line:
Happy Listening! Enough said.
I have had a few nice speaker set ups in my time including Polk, Klipsch, B&W Etc.. I listen to high resolution formats like DVD-Audio and SACD every day.My friends and family would call me an audiophile but I just enjoy a dialed in system.
I purchased these Polk R30's Last night at Fry's for 100.00 a pair! Now I thought the first time I walked by these that they were typical Polk speakers( Overpriced, Boxy and muddy sounding with a harsh metal dome tweeter.)Like my old RT1000 Polk speakers.I saw all the positive reviews on the web so I went and picked these up and connected them to my Hafler DH-101 pre amp and DH-200 amp. They are connected to Audioquest type 4 speaker cable.
So in went the Dianna Krall SACD. Now remember, you need to give these and any speaker time to "seat" or "Break in" and this is no wise tale, however as I was so amazed at what I heard I wanted to post a review as soon as possible as these speakers are discontinued and will not be for sale much longer. Now the first thing I noticed as soon as Dianna took her first breath, was the clarity and openness of the mid range. These speakers were not at all closed in sounding or fatigued at all! I could actually here her take a breath and when she would finish I could hear the moisture on her lips as she would prepare for the next note! Now I will admit that the tweeter will need time for the break in period as it was a little hashy sounding on a few notes, but the potential is there as the ting of a symbol had wonderful air and the note had nice decay.
The next CD used was a DVD-Audio of the group Fourplay, a wonderful Jazz group that covers all of the musical spectrum of delights when you want to here music in some of its finest forms. Lee Ritinours guitar blew me away! The sound was so true to live music that even my old Klipsch RF3's could not match the level of detail these speakers produced (sounds hard to believe I know). One way to tell a good speaker is how true the note sounds to the actual live piece or a "real" instrument. I listen to live Jazz here in Las Vegas about 3 times a month and these speakers delivered!
The base of Harvey Mason's drum's was tight and timbre was well defined. I tell you people that these speakers truly surprised me. They are built wonderfully and have low tight base, clear, dynamic and uncolored mids, an open and airy silk and polymer dome tweeter that will not offend like so many metal domes can.
Conclusion:
These are some of the most surprising and impressive speakers at this dirt cheap price point and well, well beyond, that I have ever heard. Give them a good amp and preamp, use quality speaker wire, isolate your components even if the old racket balls underneath do the trick, give these time to break in for at least 10 hours, Use the speaker spikes provided, and you will be in for a treat that even my 800-1,000 dollar speakers from the past could not provide.
I can only say I can't wait to get home and listen to these again as they have been playing all day at the house breaking in.
Run don't walk to get these while they are still available.
Just don't drop them while trying to hurry them through the door!
