The Bottom Line:  If you want a cheap solution for the short term while waiting for either blu-ray and HD DVD to prevail, this will work

Impressions after use:
This is a cheap unit and acts and looks like one. What that means is if you treat it carefully, it will work fine, but if you are at all hard on things, or suffer power surges or other flakiness, this will not be as 'robust' as many electronics devices that cost more.

For example, a common problem (and one that I suffer from!) is that the 'region code' detector flakes out and the unit will stop playing any region encoded discs (most DVDs are region encoded -- look for the little globe with a number in it or NTSC1 or something like that on the packaging or 'region free' which means the disc will play on any player -- (anyone know how to do a software reset on this to get rid of that problem...?)

Occasionally you will note that the D/A converter gets 'overwhelmed' with the data manipulation it must do and the disc 'skips' or there are digital artifacts like pixilation etc, but this is usually a random and non-repeating problem.

In short, it works fine, especially for a unit that costs less than $30-40, but don't expect to be passing this along you your great-grandchildren!
