The Bottom Line:
If you were considering Tivo or Replay, look at this first. No monthly fees!
I was originally looking at Tivo or Replay TV. After reading less than favorable reviews on both, I decided to take my chance on the RCA DRC7005N. As far as I can tell, this is the first review of this unit.
I'll try to go step by step.
Setup: Easy. It takes you step by step through each aspect, without too much technical jargon. The Guide Plus system takes a day or so to download its information, but once it is there, you are all set. You get a listing of all the programs in your area that you can scroll through (like an online TV Guide). And you just press the record button to save a show you would like to watch. Just one button.
Navigation: Easy. When you turn the unit on, you have a menu giving the choices of TV, DVD, Recorded Shows, MP3s, JPEGs, and then user options. Just click on what you want, and it is there. While watching TV, you can pause and rewind. You can also record a program while watching another, or watch a previously recorded program while recording another. And it is not complicated by any means.
Picture: I have analog cable. I did notice a slight difference in the picture, but it was negligible. As far as recording, you have five different qualities to choose from to maximize your recording space on the 40 Gig hard drive. #2 gives you about 24 hrs, and the picture quality is that of regular TV. The lesser options may be good, but I haven't used them yet.
DVD: The picture quality (progressive scan), and the navigation meets all expectations. It is great.
All in all, I consider this one of the best purchases I have ever made. You no longer have to be tied to TV schedules, just click what programs you like to watch, and they are recorded every time. And there are no monthly fees. The unit itself may be abit more expensive than Tivo or Replay, but you will make up the difference within a few months. I paid $356 at an online site called Beach Audio on Yahoo Shopping. Every place else was around $400 or more.
I am completely satisfied with this, and am very glad I didn't fall for the Tivo or Replay trap of monthly fees.
By the way, it has every output port available, and the remote can be programmed for whatever TV and VCR you may own.
You won't be disappointed.
