RCA Wakes Me Up

Pros Ramp-Up Alarm, Small, Dual-Alarms, NAP, Easy to use, Cheap
Cons Radio tuner not great, sound quality fair
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  RCA/Thompson makes a solid clock radio with features up the wazzoo, at this price you CAN'T be wrong.
Many useful features make this an inexpensive clock radio with all the extras of a model more than double the price. I bought this alarm clock to replace the last RCA with many of the same features. A friend busted my old one or it would have lasted a lot longer.

Here are some of the features I was looking for, and I knew RCA uses:

RAMP-UP ALARM: The beeping starts really low and gets louder and louder for about 45 seconds. I can wake up to the lowest possible volume, really makes a difference in waking to the horrible sound of a beeping alarm! Don't worry it gets really loud if you need it loud. This feature works with beeping only, but you can wake to radio stations at a fixed volume.

NAP TIMER: Count down timer then ramp-up beeping. I take quick 30m naps all the time during lunch break so I need this NAP timer, not found on many clocks, but RCA uses it on even the lower end models.

DUAL ALARMS: Each one can be set to either radio or beeping, I get up at different times on alternate days so this was also a must.

DIMMER: LED displays are WAY better for an alarm clock then the more new LCD type. Using LCD you can't read the clock at any angle, and the backlights are always way too bright. I can't wait for an Organic-LED clock radio but for now this one uses the classic LED in green. With a 2 level dimmer switch it never gets too bright.

A few things that need improvement are the radio tuner which is not as good at pulling weaker stations then my past SONY alarm clock. The sound quality of the tiny built in speaker is far from really nice sounding. I do listen to the radio a lot, so for a bed-side clock radio its good enough.

More reasons this simple RCA clock kicks major butt:
Adjustable SLEEP and SNOOZE times, a small profile, its simple and easy to use. You can set the clock and all the alarms and timers using FORWARD and REVERSE buttons.

02/10/07 - Just picked up a second RP5400 for my living because I like to pass out on the couch a lot. Get this, I paid 7.69 at Wal-Mart and they failed to charge me any tax. This is a great deal for 8 bucks even with sales tax. I'm not big on Walmart but this clock is totally worth the money. Enjoy and keep me posted if you buy this clock.

04/28/08 - Just picked up TWO more of these for another bedroom and my living room where I sleep alot. This awesome clock with a RAMP-UP alarm (see above) is selling for $5.50 at walgreens drug store. Head there right now!

07/22/10 - woke me up the other morning and I smashed it to pieces, ehh, so anyway looking for a new one I noticed this model is not made anymore. RCA clock radio as a brand was sold from thompson to audiovox. They still make an almost identical model, the RA RC05 with no nap timer or dimer.
