Lyra is worth the $$$

Pros Everything is included, works per specifications
Cons Some features are not yet enabled
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Very good, there is nothing else on market at comparable price.
I have owned a RD2780 for a few weeks now, and I have to say that the player works very well. The USB 2.0 connection is fast (~20 minutes to transfer about 4 Gb of music). You can connect a CF card in the reader, to transfer pictures or other files to the device. When you connect the Lyra to your PC, the CF card and hard drive appear as another removable drive. The playback is fairly consistent (I had one clip that played back out of sync for a few seconds, but it corrected itself.

There are a bunch of features that were planned and are not yet released: SmartTags, Playlists, Programmed Play, Favorites, Equalizer, Brightness, Color, Contrast, Audio & Video Clips, Photo Status & Notes, . And the way that the Lyra "profiles" (catalogs) the contents of the hard drive does NOT allow you to just select a genre (like pop or rock) and then select shuffled play, which would be really useful.

In any case, they will provide downloads on the RCA/Thompson website. I cannot wait until they release new OSes, and the really clever geeks begin creating hacks. There do not appear to be limits to the usefulness of the drive. I also would love to see a FM receiver/transmitter, simple video camera, and other snap-on accessories.

Navigating is easy, as there is a menu button on the right side of the device, which takes you back to the main menu. Recording from TV or playing back to TV is extremely easy (the playback may be a little fuzzy due to the recording resolution). I have not tried the audio recording feature.

I cannot speak too much from experience about battery life and play time, but the device comes with everything that you need (case, car kit, A/V & PC connector cables, and software). I would say it was well worth the ~$400 MSRP.
