The Bottom Line:
Buy this and be satisfied, but this type of technology is emerging, new units are probably right around the corner, might pay to wait and see.
I bought mine refurbished on ebay for about half the retail price. Everyones talking about ipod, but theres a new realm of entertainment electronics on the horizon and this is one of the first.
This unit comes with a 20GB internal hard drive for holding all your pictures, songs, videos and files. Uploading into the lyra is very quick with the usb connection. The unit comes with a protective case/w belt clip, all the connectors you'll need for hooking it up to your computer or TV, dc powersupply and 12v car charger.
When you plug the lyra into your computer it reads just like a mass storage device. There are 4 folders in it for drag and dropping your files into it. Just drag your whole music folder into the "audio" folder on the lyra and you're in business. Granted getting videos into it is a bit trickier as you may have to convert formats. I use WINmpg converter and that takes care of most of my needs. I hear battery life for playing movies isn't that great but for mp3's is just fine.
Sometimes the unit doesn't like the clip or music you're trying to play and it tends to error and shut down. Not quite as alarming as when you're personal computer does it, but a little disconcerting. Some of the menu interfaces could be a bit better. A little akward navigating through the files, mainly because you can't go "backwards", you have to push and hold the menu button on the side of the unit to go back to the original menu and sift through till you find where you were. It also features a neat little kickstand to hold the unit at just the right angle to watch the screen.
MP3 sound is fabulous. It comes with preset eq's or a 5 band graphic equilizer. Also, I've noticed with a lot of portable cd players that the volume just doesn't go as high as I would like. The lyra blasts my ears on full volume so no worries there.
It also has a "files" folder in it so you can drag and drop any computer files you want to store on the spacious 20GB hard drive. It also comes with a compact flash slot for additional versatility. I personally think the compact flash is big and outdated as compared to the newer card storage options today, but it will work just the same.
So, all in all a great little device, keep checking their website for firmware updates, have patience when getting videos converted and uploaded. Could use an external speaker and some of the menu features are a little cumbersome. Might as well throw a digital camera in there and a radio tuner, but maybe I ask for too much.
