The Bottom Line:
Sony makes the best Big Screen TV's. RCA comes in a close second with a price tag that's much easier to swallow.
Last year I decided to go out and buy a big screen TV. I looked at a number of models from all different companies. Of course Sony's models seemed to have a much better picture quality the price was outrageous. The picture quality on this RCA model surpassed all others at an acceptable price.
When you setup this television with a digital source such as Satellite or DVD player the picture is incredible. This TV has a very good horizontal viewing plane. You know how some big screens look like crap when you look from the side. This one is very tolerant. It's vertical viewing is different. The TV is designed to be viewed at a certain level. The level you would be looking at if you were sitting on a couch. So when standing or sitting on the floor the quality is not as great.
If you don't have a home theatre stereo setup then this is not a bad choice. For a factory speaker it produces pretty good sound. It's a large speaker so it can produce some decent bass when watching movies.
I have been displeased with some of the construction. There is a plastic frame around the outside of the screen. This doesn't fit securely on the TV unit.
I haven't used the other features because I use satellite. But if you use cable I'm sure you could take advantage of the Guide Plus television listing thing and Picture in Picture.
The 940 has standard cable hookups on the back as well as 2 svideo ports. This comes in handy as you can hook up satelloite and dvd without having to switch them. The 950 model is the same but also includes component video inputs. You will also notice on the back that there are hookups where you can hookup extra speakers to the TV to get better stereo sound.
All in all it's a very good buy. The price is right and the quality doesn't get much better. I purchased a video calibration DVD to properly tune my television by using about 50 different visual tests. To my surprise the factory settings were bang on. The only adjustment I ended up making was adjusting the brightness.
