The Bottom Line:
With the exception of the heat problem, I find the RCA RC5400P to be a great piece of equipment at such an affordable price.
After reading the two reviews about this product, I felt the RCA DVD portable needed a positive voice. I recently received this product and have been testing it in different ways, and I've found it to be an exceptional DVD portable.
On the subject of display, the unit provides a convenient "Image Display" button right on the front that will toggle between different display modes (Pan and scan, 4:3, 16:9) without the need for annoying menus.
I haven't run into any problems with the DVD player being unable to play movies. I went out and even tested the specific movies listed that "would not play" and they seem to work just fine. Also I'd like to note that it will play VCD's too, even though the details say it will not.
I find it to be a very convenient device especially when you wish to watch movies on a large screen and no player is present. It provides coaxial, composite, and S-video output, covering virtually all bases and delivering beautiful quality.
That said, the only cons that I encounter are of course, the infamous "heat" problem. This is undeniable and impossible to ignore, creating dangerous heat. It appears that RCA took some precautions by adding "feet" to the device so it doesn?t damage surfaces, but I would not recommend holding it in your hands on extended play.
The remote, while offering a world of features, also acts as an easy-to-misplace item as there is nowhere to "store" the remote on the device or attach it, but that?s just a matter of keeping an eye on things.
Overall, the RCA Portable DVD player is a great device for DVD enjoyment. Of course, I won't deny that the Toshiba DVD 8" portable could easily beat this one in terms of screen quality and on-device usage, but for it's price, the RCA DVD portable is easily a winner in it's category.
