The Bottom Line:
After getting past the initial problems with the display setting, I am quite pleased with the unit.
At first I was disappointed with the RC5400P because while playing DVDs using the built in display, it exhibited excessive video artifacts (jaggies) regardless of the mode (aspect ratio) selected from the button on the top of the unit. However, after selecting widescreen from the onscreen setup menu the picture improved dramatically. The need to set this to widescreen (from the setup menu) is not documented anywhere in the manual.
The unit is small but a bit thicker than other portables. The pictures on the box and on most web sites can be misleading as they don?t show the external battery pack. The battery snaps onto the rear of the unit and adds and extra inch and a half or so of depth to the unit. I was able to get 2 1/2 hours of runtime before the low battery indicator came on.
There are outputs for composite video and s-video. There are also outputs for normal L/R audio along with coaxial and optical digital audio.
All functions are easily accessed with the included remote. The remote is quite small with tiny membrane type buttons. The unit had exceptional slow motion playback.
This unit gets very hot on the bottom and I wouldn't recommend it be left on ones lap while veiwing.
