A Basic Boombox for Playing MP3 Files
Pros
Great bargain if you just want to play mp3s away from your computer.
Cons
Bass distortion, doesn't display mp3 text info, marginal radio receiver
Recommended it?
Yes
The RCD-160 is a boombox that plays audio/mp3 CD-R/RW discs. For sound settings it has a preset EQ and a bass enhancement. Of course, it also has an FM/AM radio with digital tuning and 10 presets for each band.
This RCD-160 is OK if you're looking for something basic. Overall, the unit sounds fine as long as you don't apply too much bass to the sound; i.e., using the 'rock' eq setting with DBBS AND a bassy CD or radio station. The radio has only marginal reception quality. Strong stations tend to bleed over to positions across the dial, which is indicative of cheap circuitry. The RCD-160 is quite speedy at playing mp3 CDs once inserted. Unfortunately, the mp3 portion of the unit doesn't display song titles or artists from their ID3 tags or even from their filenames. The method for accessing mp3 files can be quite confusing since the unit catalogs them by number. Overall, the player is good for the $45 paid at Walmart.
I'm on my second RCD-160. The first had to be returned to Walmart since it was defective. The CD drive wouldn't play MP3 CDs, and skipped quite a bit on regular audio CDs.
