The Bottom Line:
If you want a real cool looking paper weight, and an occasional CD holder - this is your model.
I got this a few months ago when I decided to lose a little weight and start exercising. I figured with my CD Burner and this, I could whip up CD's as I got sick of the old collection. I found this one at KMart, it looked like an ok model and had the features I wanted. As a bonus, it was on sale as well.
Initial thoughts
First thing I noticed upon taking it out of the box is that the buttons are TINY. They are arranged in a circular fashion and trying to decipher what button is forward/rewind or play/stop by touch alone is very difficult. The casing touts it's 45 second skip protection. Testing this out of the box, it seemed to work as advertised.
Popping the batteries in I took the CD player on it's first field test. The included headphones that come with the unit are "ok" and the sound quality was average for CD. The CD lid only opens up to about a 45 degree angle. Not real handy for inserting CD's but not a real problem. I noticed right away that the buttons push a little hard. Even worse, it takes a second to go forward a song (even without the skip protection) so I found myself skipping songs. You can jog through a song by holding the fast forward button, however the button is so stiff it frequently loses contact and you will find that you either stop before you get to the spot you want to be, or you go to the next song.
My impressions after a month of use:
The good:
Battery life is excellent, as I rarely use it anymore.
The bad:
This CD Player is VERY cheaply made. Problems that existed before just got worse. Much worse. The 45 skip protection on the player no longer works, and without it the player will skip rather easily. Forget about jogging with the unit, as the box suggests is possible, even with the 45 second skip protection i couldn't hardly walk without it skipping. The poor positioning of the buttons just got more aggravating the more I used it. Putting the buttons in a circle is rather stupid - trying to operate this in a pocket is impossible.
The sound quality was "ok" when I bought it. After a month the jack needs to be positioned carefully to get a stereo sound. Bumps will cause static noises. The RCA car adapter I have has a hard time staying in the cigarette lighter. I have killed a couple sets of batteries because I thought it was running on the car, but had slid a little lose while going down the road.
Bottom line, avoid this CD player at all costs. RCA got cheap with this model. About the only thing good I can say about it now is that at least I am only out $50.
