Cheap, cheap cheap looking

Pros Still working after 3 years of occasional stationary use
Cons Antiskip, sound quality, build quality, no line out, track access time, looks
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  The newer RCA portables might have improved on some of these problems, but from what I've heard, this epinion reflects the overall quality of RCA's cd players.
My sister got an older model of RCA personal cd player a few years back. At first it seemed to be a good deal at the price.

It had some cool features on the display like orange backlit when the AC adaptor was plugged in, it could show remaining track time and cd time. It also had this Smart ESP thing where you could open the lid and it would play music out of the buffer while you switch cd's. This worked on it at least.

Now here's where the complaints start. My sister hardly ever used it. I tried it out a couple times to compare it to the one I had at the time and I noticed it skipped way easier than mine with the antiskip turned off. The Cd player I had at the time started screwing up, so I took my sisters to school one day since she never used it and I found out even with 40 second antiskip (mine had 10) this one would skip when I walked with it in my hand.

The next thing I noticed was the batteries only lasted a couple hours and the low battery light gave little warning. The Cd player skipped easily on scratched cd's as well.

After we had it for a couple weeks the lid hinge broke on one side! This was with light, occasional use. Also a lot of time when changing songs it would seem to get stuck and make grinding noises and jump into a different song. We tried to take it back but since it wouldn't get stuck when they tested it, they said physical damage (the lid breaking off on its own) wasn't covered by the extended warranty.

Since then we've only used it hooked up to the old stereo in our bathroom. Since it doesn't have a lineout like most portable players do, the sound quality isn't as good this way. Compared to other portable cd players through the same headphones it sounds a lot worse too. And it skips really and if you turn on the antiskip theres a loud and noticeable hissing noise in your music.

Another problem I've found is when I was using it in the bathroom, I wanted to program the songs I wanted to hear and no matter how I tried to do it couldn't get the stupid programming feature to work. I'm not stupid. I've used different programming features on Sony and Panasonic portables with no problems with them so I think this one is either screwed up or just badly designed.

I'm really surprised this thing still works at all after 3 years use but it's only been used about as much as I use my portable cd in about half a year so it's not saying much.

Update: I just changed my rating from 1 star to 3 stars because of the fact that this is an older model and new ones may have improved (the quality likely won't be better because of the trend towards cheaper electronics) and because people seem to be rating this review lower so they must think I'm being to hard on it.
