A Fun Little Device, But That's About It
Pros
It's nice to have some kind of tuner with your Discman, Good (but low) sound quality
Cons
The ESP isn't great, volume doesn't go very high, tuner needs improvement
Recommended it?
Yes
Tired of making tape after tape of all my cds, I decided finally to buy a discman. I was expecting to be able to use it everywhere I went - anywhere from just working at a desk to walking around to jogging with it. I went to the store, hoping to find a discman i liked the look of with a reasonable amount of ESP for at least walking around. Drawn by my RCA's slim design and 40 second shock protection as well as it's FM tuner, I happily spent 30 dollars more than I was hoping to spend.
At first I loved everything about it. I took it that weekend on the train and then used it when i was going to sleep. After a couple days, and not very many hours of play time, I ran into my first problem: it needed new batteries. I figured that it was because I had left it on and drained the batteries. Now though, as careful as I am to keep it off and on hold when I'm not using it, the batteries run out just as quickly.
I found that while I was walking, if I wanted to keep it in my bag while i was listening, in order for it not to skip, I had to lie it flat. While it was laying horizontally, it was fine, and even when it was jostled, it didn't skip.
Running with it, I discovered the same problem. It seemed much more natural for me to hold my cd player vertically, so I could run almost as if I weren't carrying anything. Almost immediately however, it started to skip. flipping it back, so I was carrying it as if I were carrying a tray, it was a bit better. Although it still skipped, it wasn't as bad.
The sound quality of this discman is superb...as long as there is no other noise around. Even with the volume turned all the way up, it wasn't very loud. I like to be able to listen to my music up very loud, which this discman does not allow for.
The FM tuner, while legitimately a tuner, has trouble picking up a lot of stations my old walkman had no problem with. It is rare that I can listen to a radio station while moving through the city without being bombarded with as much static as there is radio programming.
While this RCA discman can do its job while sitting still, it is certainly not a dependable portable device. It is am excellent little CD player filled with several fun functions, its extras (the "40-second" shock protection and FM tuner) cannot hold their own. I recommend putting the money you would spend on this into getting a discman that only plays CDs (the overall quality would probably be better), as the FM tuner isn't great - you should probably wait for the next generation of tuners in Discmans.
