I'm quite pleased

Pros Good sound output, easy navigation, good display, random function.
Cons Build quality (?), and an annoying little break in the music from time to time.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you want to play your mp3 Cds on your stereo, this is a good way to go.
I've owned the RP8078 for more than a year and I'm very happy with it.

I had been looking for a way to play my mp3 CDs on my stereo. Most DVD players boast the capability of playing mp3s, but there were some major problems in using these as components for a stereo system. First of all, they rely on having a TV screen for navigation. Secondly, the 'Random' function never seems to work for mp3 files.

The RP8078 does the job for me. The display screen allows you to navigate through folders on the CD. Longer song titles scroll across the screen (it shows about 8 characters at a time).

The best feature for me is the 'Random' function. I press it and I have 8 to 10 hours of uninterrupted random music. I like to create theme CDs for a dinner party and they last the whole evening.

The sound output is strong and full. I really can't tell the difference between the original CD and the mp3 version. All of my music is ripped at 160 or 192 kps. The machine handles variable bit rate well too.

There are a couple of negative points to comment upon. First, there is a little glitch where, every now and then, the music cuts out for a second or two. This may only happen once in 12 hours of playing, but it is definitely there. Sort of like a buffer underrun, who knows.

Secondly, there is ALWAYS a slight gap between tracks, even if it should be played without a break. This is only a problem for me with some classical symphonies where there is no break between movements.

And thirdly, the build quality doesn't seem all that solid. Maybe this is just in my head, but it does seem to clunk around when you load the Cd tray.

Every manufacturer should be putting mp3 capabilities into their component CD players. Thanks, RCA. I do enjoy this machine.
