Walk Away From This Piece of Junk!!! Not Worth the Money!!!

Pros Nice looks. Gives good decent stereo sound.
Cons Plays DVD's in black & white only, a very severe chronic defect!!!
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  I would NOT recommend this unit even to my worst enemy!!! Simply put, it's a piece of junk!
WHY RCA?

I bought the RCA RTDVD1 to replace an Akai DVD player that all of a sudden went completely dead after only a year. I thought that I was getting at least a halfway decent sounding reliable unit. The sound wasn't too bad at least, but I thought that I at least was getting a reliable quality DVD player Boy, was I ever wrong!!!

WHAT WENT WRONG?

First, after getting it all set up, I had trouble getting the video cables connected. After about two hours trying to finish the audio / video connections, there was sound, but no video on the television set. Still trying to finish the job, this part of the job was to no avail!

So I called Radio Shack where I bought the unit. I was given the run-around! The person whom I spoke to kept putting me on hold. She did this for three times!!! Furious
& frustrated, I went over to the store & tried to get some answers. The guy who sold me this worthless piece of junk had offered to help me out. I explained to him the problem that I was having and he offered to come over to my apartment to try to get the system set up & working properly.

WHAT THEN?

After the salesman came over to help me finish the connections, he began to work on the problems. Then finally,
he was able to get the thing working. But with just one problem left. The DVD player was only showing the movies in black & white!!! All that we tried to do, nothing else seemed to work.

THEN WHAT?

The next day, I then proceeded to dismantle everything, put it all back in the box in which it came, making sure that everything was back in the box, then I took it back to Radio Shack for a refund! There was some discrepancy as to whether everything was in the box. But it all WAS in the box.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF THIS UNIT.

It's been since June when I bought the thing & took the thing back to the store, but here are some of the features:

1. 5 satellite speakers, one is for the center channel.

2. Powered subwoofer.

3. Progressive-scan DVD player with AM / FM tuner.

4. Dolby digital and digital cinema & Dolby Pro Logic.

5. Remote has an array of buttons that control such things as volume, bass, treble fast forward, rewind,
repeat etc..

6. One-year warranty on entire unit.

7. Extended warranty availible at extra cost.

ANY SHORTCOMINGS AT ALL?

Yes! Like I said, this unit only played DVD's in black & white. It is not supposed to do that. You are supposed to have color, unless you have a DVD that was recorded with an old back & white movie on it, such as a '30's or '50's sci-fi or horror movie such as Frankenstein, Dracula, Godzilla or Them!, or an old b&w comedy show or movie.

This alone, has lead me to purchase a Panasonic multi-disc
DVD player, which I'm very happy with ( please read my review on "Panasonic,. The Better Choice!! ).

Everything else seemed to work properly. But the fact that the thing only shows DVD's in black & white, I just wouldn't stand for that! Why be unhappy with something that you don't like? This worthless piece of junk just had to go back, no question about it.

FINAL THOUGHTS?

Yes! Walk away from this piece of junk!!! Don't purchase it under ANY circumstances. I had thought about getting an exact replacement or getting one of the higher-priced RCA units, but I thought to myself; "What if the same thing were to happen again?" No. Not a happening thing!! I'll NEVER buy another RCA product again, ever!!!

And ALL of Radio Shack's main electronics, such as TV's VCR's, DVD players & stereo components, THEY ARE ALL RCA products!!!
So, I'm not buying anything in that line from Radio Shack at all!! Or anywhere else for that matter!! Never again. I'm through with RCA for good!!!
