The Bottom Line:
If you want great picture and sound quality without having to pay the greater price for DVD or a Dolby Digital receiver, get the VR639HF.
I bought this VCR for my birthday two years ago. It cost roughly around 130 dollars at a nearby electronics store. Right from the time I opened up the box it came in, I knew this VCR would last me quite some time.
To begin with, this VCR has great picture quality. Of course, most four-head VCRs have quite the picture. With four heads (unlike two), the VCR can pick up information from each head that the previous head might not have received. That can result in a great loss of either picture or sound quality (if you can remember back to the two-head VCR days, you know what I'm getting at). However, the VR639HF's four heads and Accusearch technology make sure that you only get the best in picture quality (the better only being that of S-VHS or DVD, which both have enormous price tags).
The sound quality of the VR639HF is also excellent. The HI-FI stereo functions of the VCR optimize any mono or stereo sound from the tape, resulting in rich, theater-quality sound (that is, if you have a home theater). Listening to it even through my television, I have been pleased by the quality of the sound.
Two of the coolest features of the VR639HF are its MovieAdvance and CommercialAdvance functions. The MovieAdvance function fast-forwards the video past the theatrical previews. That allows you to see the movie you want and not have to worry about seeing the trailers you don't want to see. You can turn the function on or off, so those who like to see the previews can.
The other cool function, CommercialAdvance, automatically fast-forwards through the commercials present on home-recorded tapes. This can be done with either the look of the tape being fast-forwarded or have the screen be blue during the fast-forward process. This function, like MovieAdvance, can also be turned off if needed.
From the time the VCR comes out of the box to two years from now, this VCR is a true pleasure to have.
