BlackBerry 8120 Cell Phone. The Long and Winding Learning Curve!

Pros Loved the scrolling feature
Cons Key board too small for my fat fingers.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  For now I am still the old dog willing to learn new tricks but the treats on this Blackberry didn't overcome the effort of work involved to earn/learn them.
Because I have rejected using this phone and have not used it for all it is worth and capable to do, and have stopped completely, I know this should be a Somewhat Helpful review to most. The following is for the most part a gathering of reasons why this phone just didn't make it for me. I'm hoping much more informative reviews will be placed well above this post.

I recently started using the Blackberry 8120 Cell Phone. It was no longer being used by one of my children. I simply took the Sim card out of my phone and after some playing around I was able to download my data (phone numbers) over what was in the phone. Some other numbers that were in-phone stored are still there but can be deleted making it just my own. I never got that far.

Why It's Not For Me

Then came the problems.  I did know this was going to be a learning curve. I have an older flip top basic phone at this time. The letters on the Blackberry 8120 Cell Phone are in different placement that, though I do intend to learn when I get an IPhone next year, were more difficult to use than I first thought. In checking out my son's IPhone I seemed much more comfortable to dial phone numbers, text, and in the future work with the Internet. I am familiar with the QWERTY system using it daily on my computer but the tiny thumb tip positions on the small almost vertical position of this Blackberry keypad are difficult to work. I do see other Blackberry phones out there that are more horizontal in configuration. I have not yet tried them but because I do plan to get service so I can reach out further with my phone I am beginning my shopping now. This phone however is the only such I own so I am using it as a benchmark against others I look at.

Things I Liked

After a little work I found I really like scrolling with the Blackberry. It's easy and responds very well to my thumb.

I liked the voice dialing and except for in the car (probably when most needed) it worked well. In the car outside noises seemed to be a problem. Perhaps I need to get a new tight car.

I started to learn to text on the phone but that was difficult because I use sight to find keys, even when using my computer key board. I peck to write. It's fast and pretty accurate but when bringing that function down to the small keys, that I had problems hitting never mind not being able to see well, it was a cause I didn't want to get into just yet.

The phone has a great feel and is rugged even though it looks slim and sleek. It has a weight that I like and slips into my pockets easily. I really like the look and that was another reason I gave it a try.

I found the battery lasts well, a few days of my normal use. It does better than my wife's phone and as well as the flip phone I use now.

Finding numbers was easy enough with two clicks and a scroll.

pops Last Thoughts

There's so much this phone can do with video, Internet, the voice-notes recording, games and such but I am NOT in position to talk of them with NO experience on this phone.

Last week my son who had the Iphone left it in his shoe when at a beach in Maine. The tide came up and his phone went out. I offered him to use this Blackberry until he had the $500 for a replacement. He said, no. He didn't like using this particular Blackberry because he didn't find it intuitive enough for him. Go figure.

The phone is about a year old from what I recall. It's tough because I know it had some tough handling in the past.

I had to post "Recommend" or not on this review. I picked "Not" but take that for it's worth. Many people like this phone. It just didn't work for me.

For now I am still the old dog willing to learn new tricks but the treats on this particular Blackberry didn't overcome the effort of work involved to learn them.
