The Bottom Line:
Excellent productivity and e-mail tool. You are never "away from the office" when you have a Blackberry!
I've owned my 8703e for about 6 months now. I have never regretted the purchase or the extra fees for the Blackberry service, and value everyday the convenience that it gives me.
As a career, I am a self-employed network consultant who has helped many of my clients integrate combination phone/PDAs into their network infrastructure. I've owned many different PDA's, including many versions of the Palm and HP iPaq "Windows" PDA's, but never a PDA/phone. When one of my most helpless clients decided to move from a Treo to a Blackberry, I decided it was time to make the move myself.
I used my Palm to store everything imaginable; from household information like furnace filter size to my daughter's medical information, and also my calendar information which was vital to me as I make a living by billing hours. When I switched to the Blackberry, the move was almost seamless - it synced as wonderfully with Outlook as my Palm did.
The Blackberry operating system is as straight-forward and easy to use as the Palm OS, and it works flawlessly most of the time. (Every electronic gadget seems to have a hiccup every so often, and the Blackberry is no exception. But, it's worked much more flawlessly than other phones and PDA's I have owned or have supported.)
The 8703e is a CDMA phone, which means that it works with carriers such as Sprint and Verizon. Signal strength for either is good in the area where I live; if you are considering an 8703e, check with your peers who use either service to determine which is best for you.
The 8703e is not a multi-media Blackberry like some of their other models. It does not have a built-in camera or media player. It's more of a workhorse than a toy, and has a QWERTY keyboard which is easy to use for most everyone's fingers.
The battery life easily carries me through a day and a half of use, depending on whether I use the browser or bluetooth.
If you use this for work use, you may be able to sync over-the-air with Blackberry Enterprise Server, which will keep your calendar, contacts, tasks, etc. up to date, 24 hours a day. As of this date, Blackberry gives 1 free license to new Blackberry buyers to use with their Blackberry Enterprise Server. Contact Blackberry for more information on this.
It's also the ultimate e-mail machine. I have mine retrieving mail for 3 different accounts. I do not have mine setup to use with a Blackberry Enterprise Service, so I have to manually sync it with Outlook on my laptop using Blackberry Desktop Manager. This assures I have a backup in case the Blackberry is lost or broken.
Thanks to my Blackberry, several of my clients and relatives have purchased one. None have regretted their purchase!
