The Bottom Line:
Best value in class. Excellent secondary or occasional Boom Box. Strongly recommended for price conscious and value-minded consumers!
At first, I was quite skeptical about the "Durabrand" name. But, after installing a Durabrand CD/Radio into a car that I planned on selling eventually, I was sold on the quality and reliability after using it for several months.
I originally planned on purchasing a boom box for a spare bedroom where I have workout equipment and my home office. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, and nearly settled on a $99 unit. Then this model caught my eye (not for the price, but for the styling). This one was on display and was playing a CD. The $99 unit did have more options, like separate treble/bass adjustments, but these were things I decided were not really going to be necessary by the quality of the sound that was coming out of this model. It was sharp, yet with a definite bass that wasn't overpowering, yet accurate. The speakers can handle quite a good range of music.
The radio quality is excellent, and has quite a long telescopic antenna, which has very good reception, and analog dial, so you can fine-tune the stations for clarity easily.
There are a couple features, which also includes an audio "out" jack on top of the speaker in front, which is quite handy if you place it on a shelf or wish to use it with an iPod, which has that capability too. The digital readout of the track is quite handy, as it is in front, instead of on top, so viewing from far away is handy.
Battery life seems average to above-average for a Boom Box. No Boom Box will run forever on batteries, but this one seemed to last quite a while, however, does hold 6 batteries. On "Radio" only, they lasted a total of 34 hours of playing time (in intervals). For "CD" only, it played for a total of 18 hours.
The CD player was responsive and quick to find each track. The buttons are quite well and ergonomically set up for ease of use. I already have memorized the layout with my fingers (much like an alarm clock). It's capable of playing CDA, CD-R, and CD-RW which is handy too.
There is an on-board cassette player. I have only used it once, but it is very handy, and does include a recording option with a microphone. The quality of sound seems good.
Lastly, the quality was impressive. Mind you, I didn't expect the quality of a $300 unit, but I can say that I could see it being sold effectively for $60-75.
In my opinion, this is an ideal inexpensive yet thoughtful gift for someone that is looking for a portable.
Overall, I would call this a decent little boom box. It packs big sound for the price point, and also has quite a lot of options for the money.
