The Bottom Line:
Each application is different and a good installation is hard to find. The Rocford Fosgate speakers are great for the price if you can apply them to your application.
After intensive research I ended up with the T152C speakers. These speakers are good but you must install them properly. They do not operate well in open air. They need an enclosure and Fosgate does not offer information on the cubic inches or cubic feet of the enclosure. I installed these in a 1996 Toyota Avalon. They certainly out perform the factory speakers. They have better range, bass, efficiency and power. The frequency curve seems to be fairly linear.
The factory speakers have 3 mounting holes and are 4.5". The speaker market consists of 4" and 5.25" speakers. Everyone tried to sell me 4" speakers but I wanted 5.25" if possible. In my application I enlarged the radius of the hole 1/8" to get a good fit. I also created a seal using contact cement and a foam weather strip. Naturally, I had to create new screw holes. On one mounting hole location I used thin steel retainer wire to secure the speaker to the plastic housing because a screw would have entered an unacceptable area. The T152C frame was the only speaker I found that would fit with minimal modification. After securing the speaker in the enclosure it never reached the limit of its cone travel. Blocking off the existing breather port really subdued the speaker. I think the breather port hole in the door speaker cabinet could have been enlarged about 10 to 20% since this speaker has more power. While testing the speaker before sealed in the enclosure it would easily peg the speaker cone so don't try a free air installation.
Best Buy sells the speaker and the sales rep I talked to let me put my old speaker beside the T152C to carefully determine if I could make the installation modification. These same sales reps provided me with honest and accurate information. I can get these speakers on-line cheaper but I had to respect the support I received.
Overall the speakers are very impressive. If you manage a good installation they would be hard to beat for 5.25" speakers. As it is, I will not pursue a bass speaker.
I am using the Alpine CDA-9847 CD/Receiver and the car factory amp running 4 T152Cs. It is impressive. Don't settle for a 4" if a 5.25" will fit.
