The Bottom Line:
If you want a cheap but well-built amp that will do at least its rated power - this is perfect for you.
I purchased this amp directly from Rockford Fosgate in refurbished condition for a fraction of the original price.
These amps were once considered the finest Rockford Fosgate had to offer. They were a testbed for new technologies and thus paved the path for the newest generation of Punch and Power amps. After the initial launch of these amps, problems started occurring - including spontaneous combustion. These events caused the value of these amps to drop significantly and led to the refurbishment of many of them.
The original amps were rated at a conservative 550w X 1 @ 2 ohms @ around 12.5V. Rockford later rated these 700W X 1 @ 14.4V, presumably for 2006 CEA compliance/standardization. Regardless of the rating voltage, these amps were underrated and efficient to boot.
At first glance it is obvious that these are well built amps. The plenum that covers the circuitry is held in with four hex head screws and appears to be painted and clear coated. There are some plastic items on the plenum that can be swapped out for others of different colors. All connectors are separated by plastic dividers and secured with small hex head screws.
The controls are very convenient on this amp. The low pass filter and gain control are both mounted directly on top of the amp and gain be turned by hand. Unfortunately there are no visible increments for the LPF or gain control, so it is difficult to be precise while tuning the amp.
Overall, this is a great amp for the money and ideal for running most 4 ohm DVC drivers. You'll be hard pressed to find a higher quality amp for the money than these refurbished units.
