On The Go?--Try The Brinkmann Portable Charcoal Grill

Pros Portable, convenient, makes hot cooking fire
Cons Slow cooking and cooking for crowds is not practical
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The Brinkmann Portable Charcoal Grill offers great portability and a way to grill food in remote locations. It won't service a herd.
Do you spend a lot of time camping? Do you go to the lake or the river and beach up when it's time to eat? Well, if you're the outdoors type that likes those sort of activities, then you might want to consider the Brinkmann Portable Charcoal Grill for those times when you want to grill steaks, chops, burgers, chicken, fish or almost anything else while you're away from civilization. For about $40.00, you probably can't get a better grill for those purposes, and I'd like to tell you why.

The Brinkmann Portable Charcoal Grill is, as the name suggests, a portable grill, specifically designed to be transported and used in outdoor locations. It weighs about 9 pounds and has a grill surface that's probably 15 inches in diameter. With the top on, it probably stands about a foot tall, all of which makes it light and compact enough to be transported easily, regardless of the vehicle that you have. I have a Jeep Wrangler, and this grill fits very snugly in the small storage space behind the back seat. The grill surface itself is made of chrome-plated steel which should last a good long while if it's cleaned and maintained properly. All the handles on the grill (two on the side, one on the top) are made of wood, which doesn't conduct heat like metal handles do. The wood handles allow you to move the grill and remove the top without having to use gloves or other protection for your hands. Two finishes are available, black and red--due to my naturally conservative nature I selected black, but you walk-on-the-wild-side types might prefer the louder red finish.

What are the advantages of this grill? Well, first and foremost, it's designed for portability--due to it's size and weight, it's very easily transported. It can be used in any outdoor setting, and the only cleanup necessary on site is disposing of the ashes, which are pretty much biodegradable anyway. You can clean it up when you get it home, and all it takes is a good, stiff grill brush for the grill and a little soap and water for the charcoal area and top. Just be sure to dry it thoroughly after cleaning it--the Brinkmann Portable Charcoal Grill is eventually going to rust, but if you care for it properly it should last for a few years and several expeditions into the wild.

Another advantage is that the Brinkmann Portable Charcoal Grill can hold up to 15 pounds of charcoal, enough to build a good, hot fire suitable for cooking about anything.

Ah, but are there disadvantages? Yes, but I can identify only a couple--due to the size of the Brinkmann Portable Charcoal Grill, slow cooking is probably not an option--not that you would want to slow cook anything out in the wild anyway. This little grill cooks food pretty quickly, so you have to be pretty careful until you get accustomed to it--it would be very easy to burn food on it with the hot fire that it generates. And also, due to its size, the amount of food that you can cook at one time would only be sufficient for about four people. For a couple or family of four, it would be perfect, but if you're feeding a herd, you might need to consider other options.

I recommend the Brinkmann Portable Charcoal Grill--it offers portability and convenience, and the disadvantages are inherent in its size.
