Tiny camera with great image quality and fast performance

Pros Small size, Great image quality, High quality videos, Fast performance, Face detection
Cons Significant red-eye, no optical viewfinder, no optical zoom or stabilization during videos
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Nice point-and-shoot camera that you can take with you anywhere. I am pleased with 99% of the photos and it takes great pictures of people. Excellent color and skin tone.
The SD750 is an ideal fit for my main family camera. It is reasonably priced and features 7.1 megapixils with a 3x optical zoom and a beautiful 3.0" LCD display. This is truly a pocket camera with dimensions that are 3.61 x 2.24 x 0.77 in. It also features the new DIGIC III processor that has face recognition, in camera red-eye removal, and a speedy response time for power up and taking pictures.

The SD750 is also the sister camera to the SD1000 which is slightly less expensive, and has the same feature set except it is a retro "box" shape, has an optical viewfinder, and has a smaller 2.5" LCD display.

My experiences and thoughts on this camera are:

SIZE: Perfect, tiny size that easily fits into jeans pockets. Most of my missed photo opportunities were because I didn't have a camera on hand and this camera eliminates that because you can easily fit it into a pocket any time.

IMAGE QUALITY: Outstanding for such a small package. Great photos under all types of lighting: inside and outside, and even under lower-light conditions. The highest ISO rating is 1600, but the noise is very bad at this sensitivity. However, I have found ISO 400 or even 800 pictures turn out well in 4"x6" prints.

The face detection is also very helpful and produces outstanding pictures of people. I think taking people pictures is where this camera really excels. It gives great skin tones and good pictures of faces even if it has to compromise on other parts of the picture.

Colors are outstanding and realistic but with a nice punch. The default sharpness setting it a bit soft for my taste but you have full control of sharpness, contrast, saturation, skin tones, and colors under the custom colors setting (The control is great but the location under custom colors in the menu is a bit odd.)

MOVIE MODE: Good quality videos that can approach video cameras (except while zooming, unfortunately). Movie files are in motion jpeg format very large at 2MB per second, but you can record clips up to 4 GB. There are several settings to choose from including resolutions of 640x480 or 320x240 and frame rates of 15 or 30 frames per second. There is also a high speed option of 60 fps at the lower resolution and even a time-lapse option that lets you take pictures at 1-2 second intervals for up to 2 hours. This would be great for capturing sunsets and that type of thing, but I haven't had the opportunity to test it out yet. Another very nice feature is the ability to trim video clips right on the camera which can save valuable memory space.

The down side to recording video with the SD750 is that you can not use the optical zoom while recording. You can use the digital zoom up to 4x, but the image quality degrades and becomes rather pixilated at high digital zoom. In addition, there is no optical or digital image stabilization so you have to have a very steady hand or your movies will end up being very shaky.

PERFORMANCE: Very good! This camera powers up very quickly and you can go from off to your first shot in less than a second. The autofocus and shutter are also very quick and allow you to capture candid pictures of kids or pets in motion. It can also take pictures at 1.7 pictures per second for as long as you hold down the button which is nice for action shots.

BUILD QUALITY: The body is very solid, high quality, and sports the current perpetual curve desigh used in the current generation of ELPH (IXUS) cameras. My only complaints are a flimsy battery compartment door, small plastic lever that holds the battery in place, and the zoom rocker feels a little bit loose. In general, a very well built camera.

BATTERY: The battery capacity is very good for a camera of this size with around 200 shots per charge. The only down side is that you have to use the large 3" LCD display when taking pictures and movies so you can't turn off the display to save power. I would suggest buying an additional battery for a long day of shooting.

LCD SCREEN: Awesome 3.0" display with excellent definition at 230,000 pixels. It is also covered by a scratch resistant cover that does pick up fingerprints but is very easy to clean. The size is also fantastic when reviewing photos or sharing them with others. It is also bright enough for shooting in most daylight conditions.

EXTRAS:
Color swap – Allows you to swap one color for another in pictures.

Color accent - A very cool feature where the image is black and white except for a certain color that you designate. This feature is very easy to use and really adds an artistic touch to pictures. Example: beautiful pictures of my 2-year old daughter where only her pink jacket is colored.

In-camera red-eye removal in review mode – You can eliminate a lot of red-eye directly on the camera in review mode. This feature will remove most red-eye, but some photos still require post processing to completely remove red-eye.

COMPROMISES:
The SD750 is an impressive camera for the compact size. The only complaints that I have are no optical zooming during videos, and dealing with red-eye in almost all indoor pictures. Red-eye shows up in almost all of my indoor pictures, but this is a function of the convenient small size which places the flash so close to the lens. While dealing with red-eye is not convenient, the compact package makes up for this shortcoming
