Good Phone with Few Problems
Pros
Solid battery life, easy to use, good sound quality, feels more substantial than Razr.
Cons
Camera is a joke, Bluetooth problems
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Good solid phone that will satisfy most people who use it.
I have had this phone for around nine months now and I've put a lot of talk time on it. Overall, I am very satisfied with this Samsung as I am a die-hard Nokia and Motorola fan.
Looks
It is a very sleek and stylish phone, similar to the Razr but slightly narrower and with softer, rounded corners. Plus it feels much more substantial that the thin Moto without feeling heavy. After nine months, there are very few scratches on the exterior, which is hard to say for other phones I have owned.
The outside has a large display screen that is easy to read. I do wish that the screen was in color and could use a photo taken like I have seen on other phones. Also, the camera lens, which sticks out, is the one part of the phone that I hate simply because it is exposed to getting scratches much easier than the rest of the phone.
Flip open the phone and you are greeted with a wonderfully large display that looks sharp and clear. The buttons are easy to use, except for the navigation "circle" around the Cingular button.
Operation
The phone has worked flawlessly about 95% of the time. I get a strong signal where I am supposed to and just enough in rural areas to make a phone call.
Voice clarity is as good as any other phone. The ear piece works very well, with clear listening. And people on the other end do not have any problems hearing me. The speakerphone is one of the best I have ever had, with good sound and the ability to pick up my voice clearly without me yelling.
Operating the menu is simple, with all sub-menus being well-organized. To send a text message, press the Menu button and scroll up once. To change your ring settings, press Menu, scroll right and down to Settings and its the first option to choose. Of course there's a learning curve, but after a few tries, you can find out where to go like it is second nature.
Battery life is good. I can get about 3 days out of it before it turns itself off. Having the Bluetooth option on does not detract from the battery life, which is a plus since I use it a lot.
I enjoy the Bluetooth option. The phone works well recognizing the headset and I can travel a few feet away from the phone and have no problem. There are a few problems with this, but I will cover that later on in the review.
The Bad
As we all know, things are never perfect. With the c417, they are few.
-The camera is less than stellar. While easy to use and it takes nice pictures to use on the phone, sending them to other people or to my e-mail address turns them blurry and blotchy. My brother has an LG with a 2.0MP camera and his pictures turn out surprisingly nice. I know that they are made by different companies, but they came to the market around the same time and are similarly priced. Also, the exterior camera button on the side is a nuisance. Have something bulky in with the phone and it will certainly bump into it.
-The Bluetooth, while good, breaks the signal between the phone and the headset at random times. Sometimes it happens a minute after I make a phone call, other times it occurs if I haven't used the phone in a while. Sometimes it will not do it at all, while it will keep disconnecting itself at another time. I don't know if this is the headset or the phone, but I will get it looked at soon enough.
-This one is more of a quibble, but the port cover for the charger has become loose from it's rubber connector and sometimes gets caught on my pocket when taking it out. Not a major problem and while the rest of the phone feels well-made, it's a small quality oversight.
This is a good phone. It feels substantial in my hand, sounds good and is easy to use. A few annoyances for sure, but I am very satisfied with the Samsung c417.
