One of the essentials of college (ok, not essential, but a big want) is a tv and vcr. After all you have to watch all of those tv shows and movies that you love oh so much. These were the thoughts of my grandmother as she thought of me going off to college. So we went to Best Buy and were looking around for something that she might be able to afford and that were pretty good quality. We found this little Samsung tv/vcr model.
The moniter is 13 inches, which isn't too small, but its also not very big. If you are sitting far away from the tv it is quite hard to read some of the print. But it is not so small that you can't enjoy the picture. I find that there are times when the picture looks pretty fuzzy, even when I have my cable hooked up to it, but that can usually be fixed if you fiddle with all of the selections on the menu page. I find that this is too difficult to do because different stations come in differently.
This combo also comes with a vcr. I haven't had any trouble with the vcr at all. In fact I love that it has a high speed rewind, so that you aren't sitting around forever waiting for a tape to rewind. Also there are many options when viewing a tape, I don't really have the space here to tell you all of them, but I find that they are all very easy to use, and even though some of them you might not ever use they are nice to have anyway.
This combo came with a remote (mine has an eject button on it but a friend of mine who has the same model tv doesn't have this button on her remote, so I don't know if this is a basic option or if one of us got a weird remote), and an antenna. It was nice that an antenna came with the tv, but unfortunately the guy at Best Buy told us that there wasn't one so we ended up buying one (which my grandma ended up taking with her when she went home for her own tv).
This tv is cable ready, and also has A/V (Audio/visual) inputs right on the front of the tv. There is also a jack for headphones. The headphones come in handy when you are living in a dorm room with another person. That way you can watch tv without bothering your roommate.
The other great thing about this tv is the size. I know that for most people 13 inches is too small (definately not for a living room or something) but in the dorm room it was great. We put it up inside the cubby above our closets so that we could watch tv easily while we were in bed (our beds were lofted). Also, now that I am living in an apartment I have my tv in my bedroom so that I can watch it before falling asleep (and yes it does have a sleep timer) while we have a larger tv in the living room. The tv also came with a sheet of laminated paper that had all of the features of the tv on it and how to apply them. I found that this came in really handy as I was first learning how to use everything.
I also love that this tv is so light, it makes having to move it a snap. I have had to carry it down nine flights of stairs (when I was moving out of my dorm room) and between bedrooms and such. And if I can carry it that easily just about any adult could too!
So as you can see, this might not be the greatest choice for your main television. But if you want something for your dorm room, or bedroom, or for a little child this would be a great choice. It is small enough to fit in some tight spaces without losing quality.
