Samsung Glyde - Not Very Tough

Pros Not too wide, nice slide, easy to use lock button, home button, cool home screen
Cons Weak touchscreen, built like a brick, spazzes on calls and texts occasionally
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  If you really like it for some reason, go ahead and get it. Just don't expect it to be the best phone you've ever had.

Introduction

I'm a guy whose family has worn through so many dozens of cell phones that it's no surprise we've practically become gurus of the cell phone business. We're Verizon Wireless customers and, while that doesn't always equal the best service, it does mean the best quality when it comes to a cell-phone provider in my opinion (but only if you're a dedicated customer). The Verizon store is where I picked up my Samsung Glyde...

The Style

It's basically a cheaper version of the incredibly popular enV and related phones. It has the slide that the rest of them have already pioneered, but they try to market it as "Glyde" to give it some sort of uniqueness. In reality, it's the same slide as the rest of them, if not a bit cheaper.

It's not that horrible in style, but it's also nothing to gawk at. Looks a bit boring, to be honest, but since it has a touch screen it does get a little bit more style points. The deep blue I got it in was a beautiful metallica, so kudos on that.

The "Glyde"

This phone slides open very well. I can't begin to emphasize that the slide (after which the phone is named) is it's best feature. You can tell that they realized this in the marketing section of the phone's development.

The buttons are all arranged around the phone so that you can get maximum usage and capabilities while your "glyding" it back and forth. This makes it a bit more useful for those nimble fingers, but just keep in mind that there are many better phones for quick texters.

If your touch screen breaks like mine did, this "glyde" becomes an integral feature. You will be constantly going through the buttons instead of the screen, especially if you are in a humid, moist, or generally wet area (as this will absolutely wreck the screen, read below).

Screen

Touch screens are becoming hugely popular lately, and it's no surprise that the Samsung Glyde is one of the fad. This is disappointing, though, because it ruins what might otherwise be an alright phone. The touch screen was an okay deal at first (not great, not too terrible), but it turned out to be a nightmare. After a while, moisture in the air (natural moisture, mind you) got under the screen's surface layer and made it so that it was virtually unusable.

Also, the oils of the face get under the screen with certain styles of usage, so it becomes a bit of an oily bubble that constrains touch screen usage severely. It seems to be entirely unfixable, except for the mildest of screen cleans.

After taking it to the Verizon store, receiving a bit of a screen clean, etc., it barely works (which is only slightly better than after it broke). I'm sorely disappointed at the durability of this phone; where other touch screens seem to survive just fine, mine was absolutely ruined the entire time I had it.

Keyboard

The keyboard is good. The buttons are very flat, which means no annoying and excessive fingertip pains from dragging over bulky buttons like on most other phones. However, it could have been better if only ever-so-slightly rounded, as the edges may once or twice catch your fingertip.

Otherwise, there's the useful buttons and not much else on the keyboard. You can't activate anything from it, so it pairs badly with the weak touchscreen. I can't set the alarm, calendar, anything. The sliding is nice though. ;P

Calling

This phone drives me crazy when it comes to calling! As we speak, it has finally stopped allowing other people to hear me on the other end during calls (and this is not the first time this has happened with this, or with texts). I'm in the process of getting a new phone, and just to put the nail in the coffin for the calling section, it's not that high quality either.

Call quality is weak at best. I can barely hear my friend on the phone, and though she does speak very low, I have no problem on certain other phones hearing her. Since I talk with her quite often, this was a problem, and I'm very disappointed. I believe this may be more of a Verizon problem than a phone one, though.

Texting

Just like I mentioned above, texting goes out occasionally. I can't send a message to anyone, despite the fact that they can send a message to me. This is incredibly aggravating, as 90% of my phone's usage is directed at text messages. I don't really care to be on the phone with most people, so I rely on texts to get my messages across. When they fail me, the phone has failed me.

I say be careful with all touch screens when you want to be a texter, but especially this one. I have never run across a more nightmarish phone for texting/touch enthusiasts, and that is saying something as I am both. Hoepfully, I never have to run across another like it again.

TEXTERS BEWARE!

Shape and Size

Well, it's a bit of a brick, to be honest. For a touch screen, it's small because it has a very narrow screen, but it's not very thin. Compared to flip phones, it can be as much as twice the height of one and yet just as thick.

It's width is nice, to be honest, as it's not too wide and will slide into most pockets without problem. It's very smooth, and not much in the way of catches on the side. It makes an excellent transition from hand to pocket, and vice versa.

Conclusion

There are better phones out there, if you ask me (avoid the Nokia Twist, though! Read my Nokia Twist guide for details). If you really want this for some reason, it's not too bad in the end, and I suggest you only get it if it's what you want above all others. It's not the most durable or sleekest, and it does spazz out a bit, but it's not horrible.
