Excellent picture, lousy reliablility, worse warranty service

bydavras Oct 24, 2003
Pros Picture is better than Sony. Color incredible, excellent off-angle viewing.
Cons Likes to burn up, warranty service not fast.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Buy Samsung if you know how to fix them yourself, or can wait 5 months for service.
I bought the TV in Nov 2002.
Plug it in, turn it on, spend 3 days playing with the menu.
Dig instruction manual back out....oh, that's what that does.
Wow, that really is a clear picture, pop in a DVD, wow, that is even clearer!
How many connections on the back...yup, more than I can ever use.
Settle down to watch the movie a night for four months, then one night Feb 2003...pop, bang, burning plastic smell.
Call Samsung warranty folks, they'll send someone out right away.
After 3 more phone calls, they came in April 2003, yup, it's broke, we need to order parts.
3 more phone calls, they come back in June 2003, replace half the guts of the TV, still doesn't work.
Keep calling every week until August 2003, give up and call Samsung warranty up. They say that they will send a new TV out right away.
5 days later, new TV arrives.
Unpack it...it's got scratches and a dent...hmmmm....
Plug it in, notice half the screws are missing on the back panel....hmmm....
Hit auto-focus button to aim the guns..."No Sensor Data" shows up on the screen. Call Samsung Warranty, ask them "Did you send me a new TV or a refurbished one?"
Lady: "It should be a new TV."
Me: "It isn't."
Lady: "How do you know?"
Me: "It's scratched, dented, missing the owner's manual, missing screws, and doesn't have the perfect focus sensors plugged in."
Lady: "Oh. Well, the sensors are in a technician menu, so we'll have to send someone out to fix that."
Me: "When?"
Lady: "Since you have the expensive high-end TV, we will put you at the head of the line for warranty service."
That means another 5 months of waiting for the TV to be fixed...sigh.

So, I have a mostly-working $1700 TV that will probably blow up again right after the warranty runs out.

Now, to find that sensor cable so I can plug it back in...
Next time, I'm not buying a Samsung.

Samsung, if you read this, DO NOT USE 1/4 watt resistors to dissipate over 1/2 watt of heat! Yea, the green ones on the signal splitter board right beside the red tube. Next design, use an infrared camera to make sure components are not overheating before you send it to manufacturing.
