Color Wheel Flaws - After 18 Months - $410 Fix
Pros
Size; picture quality; overall look of set.
Cons
Reliability (color wheel problems); Some confusing controls and input hook-up limitations.

After 16 months of generally happy use, my Samsung 61" DLP (purchased in April of 2004) started making a high frequency noise. This turns out to be what is known as a color wheel. It is apparently a common problem, as indicated by the fact that the phone operator at Samsung Customer service immediately identified the color wheel as the problem. A web search will also reveal others having complaints.
Unfortunately for me, the 1 year warranty had expired. Several conversations with Samsung customer service were unproductive. I also spoke to the executive customer service representative, a woman named Cathy, and they refused to help. The repair cost is $410.
For those interested - a DLP uses a white light bulb; a color wheel is a rotating color filter having multiple color segments; the color wheel generates successive colored beams that are directed at the digital micro mirror device (TI chip). The spinning color wheel failing makes a high frequency noise.
