The Bottom Line:
Great HDTV at a reasonable price
This is the 3rd HDTV I purchased in a timespan of about 1 month. The first was a refurbished Samsung HLN437W which had some issues that show up in early Samsung DLP sets. The 2nd was a new LG EDTV plasma set which was horrible for viewing in a sunlit room.
3rd time is the charm. This set has a very bright detailed picture, limited only by the cable signal fed to it. DVD play back in progressive scan is near HD quality. The screen works well in sunlit room or dimly lit night time viewing. It fits perfectly in our entertainment armoire, filling it from side to side, but leaves room for a center channel speaker on a top shelf provided on the set itself. The design is clean and contemporary. There are plenty of inputs on the back to satisfy the wide range of video signals available, even PC. The internal sound is very acceptable and can do some surround extraction from movie and tv soundtracks, but I use a Home theatre setup instead. The only problem I have is that when first turned on, there are smudges on each side of the screen due to 2 layers sticking together. After about 30-45 minutes they will disappear or after gently rubbing them with a dry paper towel. There is a Samsung warranty fix but I am waiting until I see if I have any other issues before getting the screen replaced. It is not a big deal, especially since most viewing is 4:3 so the black side bars hide the smudges most of the time except in HD,or wide screen modes.
