Maxima Zoom 70--Full of Features, Lacking in Quality

Pros Nice features, good photo quality
Cons Cheap construction and poor customer service from Samsung
Recommended it? No
When I was searching for a camera, I had several specific criteria. I wanted an autofocus camera with zoom of at least 60mm, I wanted the date-stamp option, and I wanted a timer. My main uses for the camera would be family and vacation pictures.

Compared to similar Canon and Olympus models, the Samsung Maxima Zoom 70 offered more features for the same price. Some of the prominent features of the Samsung are as follows:

--Timer, and second timer, which means you can set it to take two timed shots without breaking your pose.
--Consecutive shooting, allowing the photographer to take consecutive shots without a long wait in-between.
--A landscape feature, which causes the camera to focus on the background objects rather than foreground objects.
--Several flash options, including red-eye reduction, a fill-in feature, and the ability to shut the flash off completely.
--Partial roll rewind, which allows you to rewind the roll of film before it's completely used. A waste of film, yes, but handy if you need to get the film developed quickly.

I was very happy with the clarity of photos and ease-of-use. My pictures were crisp, bright, and clear. The camera's features made up for my lack of photography experience. Unfortunately, my delight was short-lived. This camera has a champagne-colored case, which seemed irrelevant when I purchased it. Unfortunately, the plastic is very thin and poor quality. I first noticed a hairline crack along the side of the camera, where the film door latches. It didn't affect my use so I ignored it. A few weeks later, the latch that holds the film door shut snapped off, rendering the camera useless. I assumed that my warranty (included with purchase) would cover this. Instead, Samsung told me that it appeared I had dropped the camera, since there were breaks in both the case and the latch, and it wouldn't be covered by warranty.

I am very disappointed with both the quality of the plastic used on this camera and the lack of service that I received from Samsung. I recently took a look at those similar models made by Canon and Olympus, and both are made of a much thicker, higher quality plastic.

My advice to those who are shopping for a 70mm camera--keep shopping. Check the quality of materials and workmanship. If you're thinking of buying the Samsung because of the extra features it offers, consider spending a little more for a better brand. I think the better brands will pay for themselves in the long-run.
