Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Buy it on sale w/rebates. A great value in a medium/low end monitor, but no DVI cable in the box!
Lots of excellent reviews here that are very good at conveying what the product has to offer so I'll just add a few comments.
Regarding the software: Since this is my second Samsung SyncMaster (I bought a 191T+ a couple of years ago) I knew the software was garbage and didn't even open the package. Now even though I'm using an analog connection ('cause there is no friggin' DVI cable included!), this is not a problem for the typical user. Why? Two reasons. First, one press of the (hard to see) auto-tune button one time will adjust the monitor to your analog video card. Could not be easier (it's the button on the far left :) Second, the magic-brite button (second from the left and a bit harder to find) will step you through about 5 predefined brightness/contrast combos. Finally, the on/off button is on the far right. These are the only controls 99% of you will ever need.
So the bottom line is you don't need the software, use these 3 buttons instead. If you really, really care about color matching you should either buy a better monitor (heh) and/or use the DVI connection (did i mention there was no DVI cable included in the box).
Viewing angle support is pretty good. I bought it for my kids computer and I can be standing, looking over their shoulder from the side and see what they're doing. Could I watch a movie that way with excellent color rendition. Probably not, but it's good enough for home use.
Oh, this is NOT an 8ms response time monitor. It is really 16ms. Check www.tomshardware.com if you care about details on specsmanship in monitor ratings. Dont get me wrong, it's fast, faster than my 25ms 191T+. I have played games on both (multi-player not FPS) and movies and they are both fine. FYI - playing games on a 19" vs 17" (or God forbid a 15") monitor really gives you a level of immersion you have to experience to believe. And don't forget to crank the sound up!
My overall assessment is this is one heck of a good buy. It is clearly one step below the 191T+ in terms of look & feel, features, and position in the Samsung product line. But it is one, or even two steps ahead in rendering technology and costs less, too.
Well, got to go, I need to find an inexpensive DVI cable on ebay as the retail stores want more than I payed for the monitor (razors are cheap, blades are expensive, printers are cheap, ink is expensive)...
