The Bottom Line:
Compares favorably with models costing much more- a top contender if size is a factor.
I started shopping for a camcorder a month before our baby was due- a common scenario. I wanted a small "gee whiz" unit for portability and style. I have a Sony DSC50 digicam and really like it, and also use a Sony Clie PDA- so a memory stick unit would complement my existing equipment. My friend has the little Sony (IP5?) so I played with it-small, but ergonomically challenging for my large hands and over $1000 everywhere I looked. The new Sony Bluetooth models are nice, but even more expensive and I doubt I need wireless capability. The Sony TRV18, 25 and 33 are brand new and looked small in the photos, but in person are a step up in size to the true minis. I also looked at Canon Elura 40- a nicely put together unit, and almost bought one for $799 despite no accessory shoe. Then I found the Samsung SCD590 online- no local retailer had it but it was well liked @ cnet though they got a defective one. It seemed to have all I wanted- good video resolution, small size, memory stick, neat features and wow- only $599 at B&H photo. I ordered it thinking I could use the 7 day return policy if I got a lemon- that was 2 months ago. Like my son, this camcorder is a "little champ". The video resolution is sharp, colors well balanced and motor noise on playback is negligible. Low light performance is reasonable- I haven't used the night shot feature but it sounds like a gimmick. Playback through the TV is a snap and sound quality is good- the top mounted mike is very sensitive. My big hand fits the strap well and the thumbswitch camera/player controls seem sturdy and smooth. The 2.5" LCD screen has good resolution, but I use the retractable viewfinder just as often- saves battery life(about 90 min.) Zoom seemed way too fast at first but was easily mastered. Overall, I am very impressed with the performance and solidity of this camcorder and the small size is key- fits in the same bag as my digicam. I have not interfaced with my computer so I can't comment on the software or USB connection. With the Samsung, I feel I have all of the features(sans Bluetooth) of the Sony mini camcorders for about half the price.
