A basic camcorder
Pros
Price, durability
Cons
Aesthetic appeal, no light, no night vision, no digital pictures
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
For the price, it was well worth it. I was pleased.
This isn't the only camcorder I own and was purchased as a cheaper one that I wouldn't break down crying if it was broken by the less careful members of the family.
The miniDV format and IEEE firewire interface are great if you want to get video into your computer. If you plan on compressing the video this is perfect for you. 22x optical zoom is ample and smooth with customizable speed zoom options which I liked. The more expensive $1000 plus models I have dealt with don't have this quality zoom feature.
The digital image stabilization which is becoming a standard feature on most cameras is nice without sacrificing significant battery life as others have. The camera is not overweight, but definitely not a lightweight weighing in at about 1.5lbs. This is important if you are shooting for longer periods as you become more shakey from fatigue.
I recommend this camera now because you can find it cheap online at auctions or liquidators. Missing a lot of nice features but perfect for anyone that isn't interested in all the bells and whistles. (Most people never learn how to use them anyway, I am suspect of this at times too!)
P.S. I watched this camera take two four(4)foot freefalls (one onto hard-dry grass and another carpeting) and haven't had a problem. Very durable.
