Low quality for a low price.
Pros
Cheap; does the job.
Cons
Too many. Mediocre video quality, mediocre sound.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Don't buy it. An equivalent Sony camcorder (or a Sony Digital 8 one) is better in every aspect. I have not tested other manufacturers other than Sony and Samsung.
The video quality is mediocre. Weird things happen with the aliasing on edges. Resolution is low. This camera cannot handle low light situations (exposure and focus are off). The Sony Handycam series compensate for low light conditions by increasing the gain and also has a "nightshot" feature. The Samsung camera simply underexposes the picture in low light conditions.
The Samsung camera does have a digital image stabilization feature, which lowers resolution further. You probably want to use this feature to avoid shaky video. I haven't figured out how to avoid manually changing this feature every time.
The sound quality is also mediocre. There is a lot of base noise. There is a mic jack but no accessory shoe, which means you have to HOLD the microphone. This isn't very helpful.
The firewire control is quirky and frustrating. I have problems using this camera with Final Cut Pro. Your video editing software may have problems with this camera. This camera also lacks a record button.
This camcorder does not record date/time information, which is useful when editing footage on the computer in iMovie or similar programs. This information is used the split the footage into individual clips and helps organize your project.
The battery is 1 hour, and that's when you don't use the LCD. This isn't good enough to shoot a full 1-hour mini-DV tape.
Does not convert from firewire to analogy output on the fly, or vice versa. This is useful when you want to dub something from your computer to VHS tape or the reverse. What you have to do with this camera instead is to put your footage onto a mini-DV tape first. I don't even think it can record from VHS tape to mini-DV and then onto your computer (lacks a record button- go figure).
