Samsung's Great Little SCD 77 DV
Pros
Incredible color reproduction, good in low light with 1 lux rating, full manual controls.
Cons
Slightly grainy in room light, cannot transfer stills from video directly to memory card.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great because of video quality at this or even above this price point. The color looks more like that on 3 head units.
This review should be titled "get em while they're hot", except that these aren't selling all that well. I got mine at a local Sam's Club for $500 after going through prior purchase and returns of two Sony digital camcorders. The cheaper Sony had a very grainy picture except in the brightest light and the expensive one was better but with still missing color reproduction. The low end Sony only had
240,000 out of 480,000 and the better one had 480,000 out of 680,000 so it is hardly surprising that the Samsung picture looked brighter with fuller colors.
I bought this because my old video 8 had become unreliable and I also wanted to transfer digital movies directly to my computer. The "get em while they're hot" really refers to extra features being taken away from current models. The new Sonys have dropped their optical zooms from 25X to 18X on the digital 8 and only 10x on the DVs. Samsung has followed suit on the 87 which drops from a 1/4 CCD with 680,000 pixels to a 1/6inch with the same pixels but drops the zoom from 22x to 10x. There are also other features like the generic memory card to a Sony style memory stick which I find a bit annoying. For some reason I've found that on new items the early technology has bugs, the intermediate has some bugs but retains features, but that the mature version is cheaper but drops lots of features. This is the SCD 77. It's great, has a great zoom, great picture, perfect color, low lux, a combination of presets you can set as a group called "custom" mode, lots of manual adjustments, and generally feels great and has good picture. I'm just glad I got it before it too becomes like all the others.
