The Bottom Line:
This camera is average.... PERFORMANCE WISE. But look at the price tag. This camera costs below average. I've owned it for 6 months and I haven't had 1 problem.
yeah, i researched a lot of digital camcorders looking basically for the cheapest one possible. This model and a few others popped up. I compared the features, saw that the other models didn't have some of the features that this one did, and I ended up buying this one.
heres my situation: i'm a snowboarder, all i want this camcorder for is for filming my friends and I on the snow. I use the footage i get to make movies on my computer.
when i'm on the mountain taking footage this camcorder is money. it is so durable, i put it in my backpack and fall and shake and stuff and this thing is always in 1 piece. i have no problems recording in sub-freezing temps. and the battery is unaffected by the cold weather. sometimes water and ice develops on the lens, but i've cleaned it and the lens isn't scratched.
many camcorders have trouble on snow because the subject being filmed is surrounded by very bright light (reflected off of the snow), however this camcorder had no problems. i didn't even have to use the "sand snow" recording feature.
back in the studio, this camera more accurately reflects it's pricetag. firewire is fast, but with this camcorder it seems like i'm using USB. i'm using a 2003 IBM T30 laptop and i'm working in Adobe Premier so it seems like it must be the camcorder's fault. don't get me wrong, the quality of the film once transfered to your computer is good, i'm just saying it takes longer than usual to transfer it. when the footage does finally get onto your hard drive, the possibilities are endless.
OTHER STUFF:
the zoom is nice, it gets shaky though (even with "image stabilizer" on). its got a fade to black button in a weird spot, so i sometimes hit it accidentally which sucks. its got a nice weight to it, not too heavy or light. LCD is very colorfull, but hard to use in the sunlight. NITE PIX is an awesome feature to find on such a cheap camcorder.
OVERALL:
for the price of this camcorder (at this point in time) you can't beat the features and reliability. i compare this camcorder to a honda civic; maybe not all the performance of those other more expensive models, but packs a lot of the same features, reliability, and effectiveness compared to any other product on the market.
