The Bottom Line:
If you plan to use an external mic this is a good low end option
The Samsung SCD70 (71) mini dv is packed full of options often available only on higher end cameras.
The 22x optical zoom beats any other I can think of.
The LCD screen is ok but seemed quite grainy.
The picture was smoother than the JVC 320U I tried previously that was jerky.
The image stabilization is OK but I would suggest using a tripod as often as possible.
I brought this camera back to the store because there was a very loud rattling noise emanating from the tape compartment that made the videos sound like they were being played on an old reel to reel projector.
There was also a grinding noise similar to that of squealing brakes coming from the same area. As the built-in mic picks up these noises, I found using the camera as a portable unit not attractive. I tried contacting Samsung via their website to ask what my options were and if the noises were normal and they did not respond.
It is possible that the unit I was sold was defective but I was not able to verify this. I tried using a variety of mini dv cassettes, all exhibited the same noise.
