The Bottom Line:
Great image quality, excellent value, 3 year warranty. What more can you ask for in a shrinking market of CRT monitors?
I bought this value-priced monitor in summer 2004 after my KDS 19 inch monitor failed. Unfortunately, the market is geared more towards LCD monitors so there was not much selection in the CRT market. I considered this monitor, a Dell flat CRT, and the Viewsonic A95f+. The Samsung 997df seemed to be the best value for the quality.and was the only monitor which CONFIRMED a 3 year warranty (very important on some CRT monitors).
My KDS was an excellent quality monitor using a Sony Trinitron tube??A|so my hopes and standards were pretty high when I was looking for a new monitor. Let us see how the 997DF stands up to them.
Image Quality and Geometry
Overall, the quality of the image is well above average for this price range (~$200.00). The colors were very bright and the contrast is excellent. My only complaint is the dot pitch of the tube near the edges of the monitor. The dot-pitch is sharp near and around the center but about 2 inches from the edge of the monitor the dot-pitch is visibly grainy (only at higher resolutions). This is only noticeable if you have text near the edges but it is not a huge drawback. The monitor has a huge range of resolutions/frequency combinations. I currently run at 1280 x 1024 at 75 hz refresh rate with absolutely NO FLICKER and NO significant GRAININESS. Pretty impressive for a $200 monitor.
Physical Appearance and Characteristics
I really like the silver/grey exterior of this monitor. White color is too typical and black is a little tacky, but silver is a very modern look. The monitor is not very heavy at all (relative to its competitors) and it is obvious the designers were concerned with the depth and size of the monitor (it is very compact for a CRT). My only complaint is that the base is not super sturdy; if you jiggle the desk when you type, the monitor will jiggle SLIGHTLY (enough to notice). This does not bother me very much because it only jiggles a little but enough to notice.
Some Observations
My previous monitor used to change geometry as it warmed up. Luckily, this monitor does not change geometry as it is warming up or during usage. Also, my old monitor was very loud powering on due to the degaussing feature. The Samsung 997DF has a very, very quiet power on. This is a great sign of quality along with the 3 year warranty.
Overall, this monitor is great for the price and has quality that is unbelievable considering what you pay. The very, very minor defects (graininess near edges) can be overlooked easily compared to the other features. I cannot emphasize enough the important of the 3 year warranty on a CRT monitor and this monitor is one of the view which offer one.
