The Bottom Line:
I really think this is the best HTIB for the money, no other system gives you the amount of features, and quality for this price.
I spent a really long time looking at home theater systems, and reading reviews before I actually purchased one, so I had high expectations for whichever system I chose.
When it came time to purchase, my budget was $250-$300, but I really wanted to stay low, because I knew I would need other accessories like speaker stands, and cables.
I found this Samsung at Target of all places, and read the features list, and played with the demo-unit. It met all of the criteria I was looking for in a system which was:
1. Over 500 Watts
2. True 5.1 Dolby Sound (Bargain units have a "simulated" surround)
3. Progressive Scan
4. AUX Input (for devices like my iPod, or XBOX)
5. Stylish/Well Made
6. Compact Subwoofer (w/ ability to adjust the subwoofer's volume)
7. Disc Compatibility (JPEG, MP3, WMA, DVD-R, +R, RW, etc)
8. Wife's Approval
9. AM/FM Tuner
Those were my main qualifications, and ANY system I was going to by had to have all of those. I looked at Sony's comparable model, and it didn't have inputs, or adjustable subwoofer volume, and was also lower wattage. I looked at other brands like Pioneer, JVC, and even Yamaha, and none of them had what the Samsung had.
Samsung has managed to meet, and exceed my requirements for what an affordable home theater should be. This system actually belts out 800 Watts of true 5.1 Surround Sound, gives me 2 AUX Inputs, a 5-Disc Changer, fully-featured remote, great style, and full volume control over every speaker.
They've also included a USB port for connecting an MP3 player, I haven't tried it yet, but I appreciate the functionality. I also love the blue glow when the unit is powered on... but if you don't, it has a dimmer, and even the ability to turn the glow off altogether!
I never read any reviews of this model, however I had purchased a Samsung DVD player several years ago on a whim, and I was impressed with it's picture quality, and longevity, it still works perfectly! I trusted that the Samsung brand would come through for me again, and they have!
We bought this because I wanted surround sound for movies, and my wife wanted a way to listen to her CDs and the radio, this solved all of those problems, at a great price and I couldn't have asked for anything more.
