The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this unit ONLY if you are comfortable tearing electronics apart to have a long life of usage. Otherwise, find something designed better.
I bought this system in February of 2006 just before the Super Bowl to go along with the big Sony TV I just bought.
I bought it because the store had a display out and I was extremely impressed with the sound quality ESPECIALLY for the price! The bass was deep and the highs were very crisp. Besides this, it had a 6 DVD changer.
Set up was very easy with the most difficult part being the running of the wire around my upstairs living room. Once we got it all hooked up we were VERY pleased with the sound in our home, just like I was in the store.
We enjoyed trouble free usage for about 5 months. Then the discs started skipping a little bit here and there and we would sometimes have a little trouble getting the player to read the DVD. After 3 more months of this, it finally quit playing DVD COMPLETELY! I was looking at the unit and the ventilation is TERRIBLE. There is a fan that is supposed to circulate air but the lack of vents will not allow much air to pull through.
So I took the cover off and removed the laser eye cover and the whole inside was absolutely covered in dust, including the eyelet! I used compressed air at 20 psi and blew all of the dust out and put it back together. It started working flawlessly again!
So now, every 3 months I have to blow it out. This isn't a big deal, but not everyone feels comfortable taking electronic equipment apart to do this.
So I would recommend looking at the complete body before buying DVD players or CD players that require a laser eye to read the media.
