Decent cheap VCR

The Bottom Line:
Unless you need high-end features (and why would you, it's VHS!), I can't see any reason to buy a more expensive model. This one's just fine.
Kind of a bummer to have your VCR break these days, because we're almost at the end of the life of the VHS tape... but not quite.
If you're like me, you have a few tapes to convert, or watch one last time, and so you'd find yourself at the local electronics store saying, "Give me the cheapest VCR you've got."
I didn't really care what they gave me, because I figured that it would 1) play VHS tapes and 2) have stereo audio... really, what's the point with any other bells and whistles for playing a few last, dying VHS tapes?
But, I was pleasantly surprised that even the cheapest VCR in the store has a polished and well-put-together set of on-screen menus, automatically adjusts tracking extremely well (and quickly), has a reasonably clean picture, robust transitions between states (play, FF, stop, etc), very fast rewind, and record timer (quaint in the post-Tivo age).
It also included some extra niceties, such as automatic clock set (for cable providers that support it), commercial auto-skip FF (only so-so), and front-panel A/V ports.
In comparison to the VCRs of years past, it's extraordinarily light, and gives the impression the whole thing has been cast in aerated plastic with only a couple moving parts (though obviously this isn't exactly the case).
I've had it for a bit over a year now, and find it's performing extremely well, and will undoubtedly be the VCR that sees my last few tapes into their twilight years, finally outlasting the VHS standard itself.
