CAVEAT
Let me begin this review by stating that I do NOT do extensive photo editing or professional publishing, so I cannot comment on certain parameters that professionals may require for an LCD computer monitor. However, I doubt that a professional would use a "low-end" monitor such as this one - I believe that this model is designed for the home-user and I will therefore comment as a home user.
With all of that said, I have been a long-time fan of Samsung monitors. In my years of computer experience, the Samsung models (both CRT and LCD) that I have ever purchased have been excellent in quality and extremely durable and reliable. So much so, that I also bought a Samsung LCD High Definition television (see separate review).
At my job I recently received a new Dell Precision computer for video editing. This PC has a dual monitor ATI video card. So, my computer tech set up 2-Dell 17" monitors on the desktop. I really fell in love with having two monitors side-by-side.
I checked local prices and found the Samsung 720N (17" LCD analog) monitors on sale at TigerDirect. After rebate, I paid $139.00 plus sales tax. I couldn't ask for a better deal. So I purchased two for my desktop at home (also have an ATI Rage card with 2 video outs). I was a little concerned about going back to analog after having a Dell 17" digital monitor with my home PC for the past year.
After unboxing both monitors, setup was a snap. The base screws onto the main monitor with no tools required. The screw has a small piece that flips up and allows you to screw the base on by hand. Samsung recommends using the drivers included on the CD when installing which I did without a problem.
This monitor is recommended at a resolution of 1280 X 1024, but having close to 1/2 century eyes, I find that 1024 x 768 is a little easier to view icons and text. Granted, at the higher resolution, everything is razor sharp, but the slightly lower resolution is still very nice.
Colors and saturation are gorgeous. Both monitors arrived with no dead pixels or setup problems. I put them through the rigors of video editing which included fast-moving images. Setting up the extended desktop in XP was a snap also and the monitors performed equally well.
The bottom line is that if you are an average home user and want a great LCD 17" monitor for your PC at an oustanding price, you simply can't beat the Samsung 720N. It has a very small footprint which is great for limited desk space and the very narrow bezels allows the user to set them side-by-side for extended desktop with little dead space in-between.
If you are a hard-core photographer or require precise monitors, then you may want to consider a digital model. However, these monitors are excellent for the home user.
