The Bottom Line:
I think this monitor is a good upgrade for the occasional computer user. If you are willing to give up the flat screen, then you probably can't do better.
Monitors are a tough purchase. Even being fairly knowledgeable about dot pitch, refresh rates, etc., you still really need to sit in front of the thing and see if it floats your boat. The colors can vary from monitor to monitor (set by the manufacturer) even if they use the same technology such as trinitron.
The 950p utilizes Shadowmask technology, which is much cheaper than the trinitron/diamondtron technology. The difference between the two is that the former uses holes punched through a sheet of metal and the latter uses wires woven on a frame. Basically the difference is that the shadowmask is supposed to be brighter and the trinitron is supposed to be sharper.
However, I have yet to see a shadowmask that is a flat screen. Samsung has something close to it - their dynaflat line, but it really is just a flat piece of glass on top of a curved screen.
Trinitron/diamondron technology is owned by sony/mitsubishi, so any manufacturer using a trinitron/diamondtron tube is using a tube manufactured by sony/mitsubishi. The difference is how the manufacturer tunes the tube.
I was unsure how I felt about all this. Do I really need a flat screen? Do I need a trinitron? Is a shadow mask really that much worse?
I read an article in PC World declaring the 950p a best buy. For whatever reason, that swayed me. I searched using mysimon.com for the lowest price. I found Gateway Accessory Store was selling it with free shipping and a 35 dollar coupon. Total price = $210, delivered.
When the monitor came, I quickly plugged and played and was soon very aware of the screen's curvature. I figured when I chose this monitor that the curve won't bother me because I'd be looking at text primarily. I was wrong. The distortion on the edges of the monitor (about 1" from the edge) was distracting.
However, the colors and clarity were excellent. It was very bright and displayed a richness of colors that surprised me. Text was legible at the 1280x1024 resolution. I don't recommend going beyond that resolution because the refresh rate lowers to about 70mhz and flicker is obvious. The controls were easy to understand and were accessed via a cool push in drawer type mechanism.
The monitor case is big and bulky, about 21 inches deep. It's also heavy as all crt type monitors are.
